On March 18, 2018 a bushfire began near Reedy Swamp and rapidly moved East towards Tathra, NSW. By late afternoon, the fire had begun directly impacting homes on the Western fringe of the town. In total, 69 homes and 30 caravans were destroyed. A further 39 homes were damaged.

Over the same weekend, several fires affected properties in Victoria. The worst affected communities were those of Terang, Warrnambool and surrounds.

On 19 March, the ICA declared a catastrophe for the fires in NSW and VIC. Disaster recovery specialists were deployed to the affected regions to manage the insurance recovery, liaise with government and assist the community.
