The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) will host a series of community insurance forums next month across some of the most cyclone and flood-exposed parts of North Queensland.
ICA CEO Rob Whelan said the forums would help householders and business owners learn more about their own insurance.
“Insurers know the region well, having paid more than $4.4 billion in flood and cyclone claims in North Queensland in the past decade, including more than $800 million following Cyclone Debbie,” Mr Whelan said.
“Though insurers are working hard to help families and businesses rebuild and recover, the industry often hears common questions and misconceptions about insurance, especially as it relates to natural disasters. The forums are being held in seven key communities to provide information on insurance and risks, bust some myths and hear from policyholders.
“ICA experts will provide a briefing on the issues and risks facing each location and how they impact on insurance. Attendees will be able to speak one-on-one to an insurance expert about their own situation.”
Topics to be covered in the forums include:
· How does insurance work?
· Is insurance available to everyone?
· How do cyclones and floods affect my premiums?
· What can be done to lower premiums?
The forums will be held at:
· Cairns – Monday July 3, 6.15-9pm
· Innisfail – Tuesday July 4, 6-9pm
· Ingham – Wednesday July 5, 6-9pm
· Townsville – Thursday July 6, 6-9pm
· Proserpine – Friday July 7, 6-9pm
· Mackay – Monday July 10, 6-9pm
· Rockhampton – Tuesday July 11, 6-9pm
The ICA has invited local councillors and politicians to the forums, and is encouraging local insurance brokers and other insurance professionals to attend.
